SQUIRTS
2/23/2013- 3/31/2013

February 23—March 31, 2013

April Childers, David Leggett, Max Maslansky

Opening Reception: Saturday February 23, 2013, 7-10pm

Digesting images and objects from popular culture, artists April Childers, David Leggett and Max Maslansky take on the roles of both cultural deviants and comedians, delivering hard and fast truths through urgent expression. Childers’ sculptures use found objects alongside constructed supports that frame an intuitive symbology which pulls from cartoons, dollar store detritus, ghostly imagery and taxidermy. Leggett’s paintings, sprinkled with craft materials such as felt, pom poms and wiggle eyes, directly and playfully address racially loaded moments of self-identification. Maslansky’s paintings—often made on old bedsheets—come out of an archive of images self-consciously scavenged from the depths of the internet, probing into the comical absurdities of voyeurism and the male ego.

April Childers (b. 1979, Strawberry Plains, TN) received her BFA from the University of Tennessee in 2004 and her MFA from the University of South Florida in 2009. Exhibitions include New Capital (Chicago, IL), The Front (New Orleans, LA) and Paul Robeson Gallery, Rutgers (Newark, NJ). She is also a collaborator in the ongoing project, Destineez Child. April lives and works in New York.

David Leggett (b. 1980, Springfield, MA) received his BFA from Savannah College of Art and Design (2003), and a MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2007). He also attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2010). He has shown his work throughout the United States and internationally, including recent solo shows at Western Exhibitions (2012) and the Hyde Park Art Center (2012) in Chicago. He received the visual artist award from 3Arts in 2009. David lives and works in Chicago.

Max Maslansky (b. 1976, Los Angeles, CA) received his BFA from Bard College in 1999 and his MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 2006. He has held solo exhibitions at Cherry and Martin, Los Angeles in 2006 and 2007 and at Emma Gray HQ in 2011. He hosts a bi-monthly talk show, "Riffin’", on KChung Radio (www.kchungradio.org), Los Angeles, where he lives and works. He will be included in Made in Space at Night Gallery, Los Angeles curated by Laura Owens and Peter Harkawik in March 2013.
