I WANTED TO PUT THIS IN AN ENVELOPE BENEATH YEVGENIYA"S BLACKEST PAINTING
by Jennifer Nelson

“oh what a sticky tar sticky
picture of great great great great
great grandmothers still alive
a wig and seventeen green eyes and a
wrap it up with your fingerprints”
If you give me one real human child,
I’ll chisel its face black and diadem
its skull flat.
I’m sorry if that’s aggressive.

Jennifer Nelson is writing her PhD dissertation in the History of Art at Yale University and is an MFA candidate at NYU.
She is a poetry editor at Washington Square Review and co-curates the Cornelia Street Reading Series.
