In companion with the exhibition: Hand's Tide

HAND"S TIDE (HANDS TIED)
by David McDonough

Scribble work;

            “Smart scribbles”

Scribbles with meaning and influence

What we think

      Produced by thought

   Thought from rote;

Exercise

The need to express

      Without breath

He was very much struck

            By how every time he walked around

To the front of the building and gazed…

      Into the third story window,

There,

In the same room

Was a woman upturning the same bottle as before

Taking the same sip

From the same place -- both in the bottle and in the room

Intestine Strings

Harping

On what once played them:

Bile

Chewed Apple

One sliver of fishbone

      Squeezing it’s way past,

Passed.

And the vines came together

            Meshing

Both

Growing upward and hanging;

Entangled more than entwined

      Leaping forward, struggling outward.

Reflections or refractions

            Of lines in water

  Blue and Yellow Ochre

Squiggle and squirm

            to psychedelic noise music

in the background

As the music insinuates screaming

      The lines morph into curves.

Colorful quilted patterns became subway maps

Space-glaze and the after-brush of a thought.

The sweep west made more sense

            Out of nothing

The patterns becoming the need for more something

Perhaps needlessly

            A hope strewn idea,

      Gave way to tactile function

   Taciturn and rotund

Little else was heard

By way of words

Meaning,

Meaning.
